System Integration in Mercado Libre

About Mercado Libre

It is the largest e-commerce platform in Latin America. It operates in 18 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The goal is to democratize e-commerce and financial services.

The Problem

The system that allowed sellers to configure their order preparation time and daily maximum shipping capacity was external, and therefore, updates took a week to become active. With the integration, these changes can now be made in real time and applied on the same day if done before the system's closing time.

Team and Tools

  • UX Writer, Product Designer, and Development

  • Tool: Figma

Impact Mapping

I first mapped the potential impacts of this change on the front-end, help FAQs, and automatic communications that sellers receive, using FigJam.

Planning

After mapping the impacts, we planned the necessary changes for implementing the update:

  • Front-end: Inclusion of an alert explaining the change.

  • Communications: Text revision and sending schedule.

  • FAQ: Review of the help FAQ under the "More Information" link.

Proposed Changes

On the front-end, we added an Onboarding Alert to notify users of the update.

We also updated the system responses on the page itself, prioritizing clarity when the seller updates a setting:

Day-specific Alerts:

Additionally, we included an orange alert to highlight the use case where the maximum shipping capacity for that day had already been exceeded.

Snackbar after making changes:

Conclusions

With these changes, we mitigated user experience friction for sellers and reduced the chances of them needing to contact our customer service. Alongside these changes, we also created a help FAQ explaining the update, accessible via the "More Information" link on the front-end.
